Sharjah has announced a Dh750 million road development program that will introduce new routes to Dubai, improve access to major highways and address congestion on some of the UAE’s busiest commuter corridors.

The package of projects, announced by Sheikh Dr Sultan bin Mohammed Al Qasimi, Supreme Council Member and Ruler of Sharjah, includes a major tunnel project in Al Taawun, a new road connection to Dubai and upgrades designed to improve movement between the two emirates.

Al Taawun tunnel

The largest component of the program is a new tunnel beneath Al Taawun that will provide a direct connection towards Dubai through Al Nahda Bridge.

The dual-carriageway tunnel is expected to divert a significant volume of traffic away from surface roads and reduce congestion at Al Taawun Roundabout, one of the busiest junctions linking Sharjah and Dubai.

Sheikh Dr Sultan said the project was developed in response to increasing traffic volumes along Al Taawun Road, a key route used daily by commuters travelling between the two emirates.

Noor Road

Sharjah is also developing Noor Road, a new corridor that will extend from Al Orooba Street directly towards Dubai through Al Nahda Bridge.

The road is scheduled to open by the end of 2026 and will provide motorists with an additional route into Dubai.

Authorities expect the new connection to improve access between residential and commercial districts in Sharjah and neighbouring areas of Dubai.

Links to major highways

The tunnel project will also strengthen connections to Emirates Road and Sheikh Mohammed bin Zayed Road, providing motorists with more direct access to destinations across the UAE.

Road improvements will extend to Expo Centre Sharjah, where new directional signs will guide visitors to the exhibition venue and its parking facilities.

Easing commuter traffic

Officials said the projects are expected to reduce pressure on existing routes, shorten travel times and make it easier for motorists to move between Sharjah and Dubai without passing through multiple congested intersections.

While no completion date has been announced for the Al Taawun tunnel, Noor Road is expected to open before the end of next year.

Sheikh Dr Sultan said the developments are intended not only to improve traffic flow but also to strengthen links between Sharjah and Dubai.

“We are opening these internal areas to our neighbours,” he said, adding that Sharjah remains a welcoming destination for residents and visitors.
