New Delhi: Tripura Police have initiated legal proceedings over a viral social media video allegedly showing a person from the northeastern state being subjected to sexual assault, harassment and racial abuse, while a students’ organisation has approached Delhi Police seeking an investigation.

The Tripura Students Forum Delhi (TSF'D) submitted a complaint on Thursday, urging authorities to examine the footage and take appropriate legal action against those involved. Union Minister Kiren Rijiju also highlighted the matter on social media.

The Forum alleged that the video contained ethnic slurs, including “Chinki” and “Chiness”, used to demean the individual. It said the alleged conduct raised concerns about personal dignity, safety and discrimination against people from the Northeast.

The organisation called for the identification of the social media account operator and anyone who may have participated in or recorded the incident. It also urged authorities to preserve digital evidence, including the original video and account records, and ensure the affected person’s privacy and protection from further harassment.

Delhi Police sources said the Special Police Unit for North-Eastern Region (SPUNER) had approached the Intelligence Fusion and Strategic Operations (IFSO) unit to investigate the viral footage.

The IFSO unit is expected to examine the video and pursue further inquiries. Tripura Police said a case was being registered under relevant legal provisions, with further action to follow in accordance with the law.
