Gujarat Police parade Muslim youths on streets tied with ropes; row
text_fieldsRajkot: Gujarat Police have triggered outrage after parading Muslim youths through Songadh with ropes tied around them following a communal clash linked to a Navratri-related social media post.
Police arrested nine adults and detained a minor after a group allegedly pelted a Hindu man’s home with stones on October 20. All those detained are Muslim. The dispute reportedly followed an Instagram comment by the complainant’s son, Bakulbhai Dayarambhai Chaudhary, which allegedly contained anti-Muslim remarks. No action has reportedly been taken against him.

Police tied ropes around the accused and escorted them on foot to the alleged stone-pelting site in public view. They were booked under the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita, including Section 109(1) for attempted murder, Section 125 and rioting-related provisions. The allegations have not been proven in court.
The complainant alleged that a crowd gathered outside his house around 5 pm and continued throwing stones despite the doors being shut. He also claimed some people tried to attack him when police arrived.
Hindu organisations protested outside Songadh police station, demanding action against the accused and alleged encroachments and businesses linked to them. An indefinite shutdown call was withdrawn after police promised action.
Deputy Superintendent of Police Ishwar Parmar said officers quickly brought the situation under control. Police urged residents not to spread rumours, saying FIR details were withheld because the case was classified as sensitive.
The public parade has renewed scrutiny of Gujarat Police’s treatment of Muslim suspects. The Supreme Court had previously questioned police authority to tie accused men to poles and flog them after a separate Garba-related incident.
